The Club de Golf Terramar shines in Europe with the triumph of the Swedish player Maja Stark
From the 1st to the 3rd of October, 2021, the Estrella Damm Ladies Open presented by Catalunya returned to the Ladies European Tour calendar in its fourth edition, after the pause caused by the Covid-19 in 2020. That is why the Club de Golf Terramar in Sitges, Barcelona, on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, put everything in to welcome the best European lady golfers with open arms, seeking a successor to Carlota Ciganda, the 2019 champion.
With the main sponsorship of Estrella Damm and the institutional sponsorship of the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Sitges City Council, which declared the event of special relevance, the tournament was presented from the spectacular staircase of the San Bartolomé and Santa Tecla church, with La Fragata beach framing an act focused on praising women’s golf. Above all, it sought to make Barcelona and Catalan golf visible, given the international projection offered by the annual and already consolidated event, which also promotes the region as a tourist destination.
More than 125 players from 26 different nationalities enjoyed Sitges and the Club de Golf Terramar, a course that had a great impact due to the competition debut of its recent renovation. Thus, the participants faced a challenge quite different from that encountered in previous editions.
With almost a century of history, it boasts a combination of tradition and modernity in the facilities that few clubs can match. The remodeling of the layout, the result of the Terramar 21 master plan, has been carried out by the prestigious Mackenzie & Ebert studio of architects. This principally involved the 10, 13 and 15 holes with the creation of a huge lake, which has added character and beauty to a course that already stood out for its character. Visitors will be able to appreciate this even more on their golf getaways.
It is the largest lake that exists in a Catalonia golf course, created as an essential aquifer reserve to ensure the future of the course, with an explosion of biodiversity which has already begun to enrich the natural quality of the space it occupies.
The project has also served to lengthen some holes and increase the par of the course to 72. Sustainability and environmental responsibility are fundamental pillars which combine wonderfully with the new options that Terramar offers to the privileged golfers who come to play its new holes.
“The master plan updates the course according to three basic pillars: the sustainability of the course, internal and external security and the updating of the layout. This last aspect contemplates the modernization of the oldest holes, since some of them are practically one hundred years old and were designed for other types of players and equipment. Mackenzie & Ebert, an international company renowned for the reform of courses of The British Open rotation, was awarded the project and has executed it with great success”, summarized Tomás González, director of the Club de Golf Terramar.
“In 2010, more than a thousand trees were planted to give it character and add strategic elements. In parallel with the master plan, we are developing another one for fauna and flora, as we want the club to be a reference in terms of native species in the area and to become the lung of El Garraf and the garden of Sitges”.
The course was in magnificent condition for the Estrella Damm Ladies Open presented by Catalunya, thanks to the excellent maintenance work at the Club de Golf Terramar, where the young Swedish Maja Stark was proclaimed champion. At just 21 years of age, Maja has revealed herself in Sitges to be a great promise on the Ladies European Tour, winning with a consistent comeback of 65 shots in the last round.
With a total of 208 shots and 8 under par, she beat the Slovenian Pia Babnik by two shots, and finished four shots ahead of the tied third classified, Spanish María Hernández, Finnish Krista Bakker and Scottish Kylie Henry.
See you next year!
