Nestled at the heart of the Alt Penedés, from where all cava is produced, is the Club de Golf Barcelona, a place where you can book a tee time to enjoy the social and family ambience of sports lovers, surrounded by nature and with exceptional views of the mountain of Montserrat.
Next to the village of Sant Esteve de Sesrovires, this golf course has just celebrated its 30th anniversary, and is only 41km from the centre of Barcelona, with easy access from the airport and the city via the AP2, taking the Martorell exit and then following the link off the road towards Capellades.
Opened in 1989 under the name of Club de Golf Masia Bach, the estate within which it lies, is one of Catalonia’s most historic and traditional clubs. It is the perfect place for a golf break thanks to its ample services, and its two golf courses designed by José María Olazábal, double Masters champion, and player and captain of the European Ryder Cup winning teams.
Ready for a full golf day
The club covers 6,000 square metres of surface with first class sports facilities. The two courses are well differentiated, with an 18 hole championship par 72, and a second course with 9 holes par 31, well supported by a large driving range and the prestigious Barcelona Golf Academy. The course is dominated by an imposing clubhouse of three floors, with spacious rooms, a proshop, a new gym specially equipped for golfers, and the Racó Canela Golf restaurant, of great gastronomic interest for its exquisite Catalan market cuisine, where you can recover after playing, while admiring Montserrat from its wide terraces.
Luxury accommodation is just 100 metres from the clubhouse, the DoubleTree Hotel by Hilton Barcelona Golf & Spa, which is modern and comfortable, with 150 spacious rooms, a lobby bar, a restaurant, a wellness centre, a beauty centre, a gym and an outdoor swimming pool surrounded by gardens.
The club offers the Masia Bach course, 18 holes par 72 and 6,271m long, which has recently undergone renovations which make it even more attractive. It is a course of reasonable length that is challenging for any player, as it requires long and straight shots, and the handling of tricky slopes and uneven stretches during the game.
With its varied and demanding character, combined with excellent maintenance, it is much appreciated for competition golf. In fact, its first big commitment was held in 1991, with the Spanish Professionals Championship won by José María Cañizares. It has also hosted the Peugeot Tour three times, and the Ladies European Tour with the Catalonia Ladies Masters in 2007.
A perfect orography adaptation to the terrain
Thanks to its magnificent design, the course challenges you to a variety of shots of distinct difficulty. Its perfect adaptation to the orography, with the valleys and ravines for which it is so well-known, encourages the golfer to use every golf club in the bag. The undulating terrain offers holes with distances for all kinds of players, and large greens with steep slopes.
In addition to the geographical contours, water also comes into play, bordering the left of the 2nd and 3rd holes, the iconic 8th hole, and behind the green of the 17th hole. Considered the best 8th hole in Catalonia, it’s a par 4 of 342 metres fairly flat, with an out of limits on the right and water on the left along the entire fairway and ending next to the green.
Without doubt this is one of the best inland golf courses by Olazábal, where accuracy to the pin prevails over power, and in which the numerous hazards penalize the errors, both indisputable hallmarks of its designer.
The Executive course of 9 holes is flatter and easier than the championship course, and has an ideal layout for a good training session or a more calm and relaxed day of golf.
Among the points of interest there is the Masía Bach winery mansion itself, dating from 1918, located next to the 18th hole, which gave the club its first name. As we are at the heart of the Alt Penedès region, considered the ‘Spanish Tuscany’ for its resemblance, recommended visits include the Cavas Codorniu and gardens in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, the Wine Museum of Vilafranca del Penedès, the numerous wineries and the medieval village of Sant Martí Sarroca. The backdrop is one of the symbols of Catalonia, the mountain and the monastery of Montserrat.
